Introduction
From PHR's Deputy Director Susannah Sirkin:
I traveled to Sudan—Khartoum and Nyala (south Darfur)—for ten days in July, 2007. The primary goal of the trip was to deliver a training in the documentation and treatment of rape and sexual violence for Darfurian doctors, lawyers, psychologists and social workers treating victims of sexual abuse. The Janjaweed's use of rape as a weapon of war has caused the incidences of sexual violence to skyrocket since the conflict in Darfur began.
I also used the trip as an opportunity to meet with representatives of Darfurian and international human rights and civil society organizations, as well as with UN officials, to broaden our understanding of the situation in Darfur.
What follows is a series of excerpts from my Sudan journal.
