Becoming an Effective Leader

The PHR Student Program is committed to helping you become a leader in the health and human rights movement. As a member of your PHR chapter, you will have opportunities to sharpen your leadership skills.

Training

The PHR Student Program organizes on-campus training for you to learn a variety of advocacy skills. Student Program staff will come directly to your school to teach organizing, media relations, political advocacy and other skills needed to prepare you to lead the health and human rights movement.

Student Leadership Institute

Each year, PHR holds a Student Leadership Institute for a small group of dedicated PHR students. PHR will provide this unique opportunity to student leaders who demonstrate an exceptional commitment to health & human rights.

  • Develop skills to become a more effective activist and leader on campus;
  • Gain a deeper understanding of the most pressing health & human rights issues;
  • Learn about upcoming developments in Student Program priorities such as AIDS, Darfur, and Health & Human Rights Education;
  • Create an action plan for student activism for the coming year;
  • Connect with, and learn from, other PHR student leaders, PHR Staff and Board of Directors.

Students must apply for this opportunity. Look for an email from Danielle, Student Program Coordinator, (dfox [at] phrusa [dot] org) for further information.

Student Advisory Board

The PHR Student Advisory Board consists of seven students who have proven their leadership and commitment to the health & human rights movement. The Advisory Board works closely with the Student Program team to represent the student voice within PHR. Contact Danielle at dfox [at] phrusa [dot] org for further information.

Contribute to the Blog

The Student Program blog gives you a powerful opportunity to add your voice and learn from your peers. Whether you are posting an entry of your own or making a comment, this is a forum for you to promote awareness and discussion of health and human rights issues.

Use This Toolbox

The Student Chapter Toolbox contains information that will help you sharpen your leadership skills. You will learn the best ways to build your chapter and keep it strong. The toolbox guides will also help you organize local events that teach others about PHR campaigns and about the right to health. You will also find strategies for advancing an issue by engaging with policy makers, media and your local community. The toolbox will help you to become an effective leader.
