Students Take Part in Legislative Advocacy
Students made a big difference on some of PHR's priority legislative initiatives in 2006-2007.
- In February of 2007, President Bush signed into law $4.5 billion dollars of funding for fiscal year 2007 to fight AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. Students played an important role in this, by educating their campus communities about AIDS funding issues and calling and writing their representatives to support increased AIDS funding.
- Students participated in National Call-In Days to secure support from key Senators and Representatives for the African Health Capacity Investment Act of 2007, a bill that would begin to address the massive shortage of health workers in Sub-Saharan Africa.
- Students participated in the three PHR regional advocacy trainings, where students learned policy skills and more about PHR and its Health Action AIDS Campaign. Attendees' from Tufts University School of Medicine and Medical College of Virginia put these skills to use straight away and met with their local legislators to discuss African health systems and urged them to support the African Health Capacity Investment Act.
