Darfur Action Options
Level 1
1. Use PHR's Google Earth virtual tour of Darfur to display the tangible consequences of the genocide (requires Google Earth)
- Collect signatures or handwritten letters as part of actions to stop the attacks.
- See PHR's Google Earth Guide (pdf), Google Earth tour, and Sample Protection Petition
2. Organize a petition drive to collect signatures to push President Bush to cooperate with the International Criminal Court by sharing all relevant materials and intelligence so that it can bring the strongest possible case against the war criminals.
- For a creative take on petitioning, use a large piece of cloth instead of paper to highlight the Darfurian practice of burying loved ones by wrapping them up in a single cloth.
- Let President Bush know that the massive burials will only stop once the international community holds the Sudanese government accountable. If interested, contact Danielle at dfox [at] phrusa [dot] org for further information.
- See the site "Wanted for War Crimes" to use the online petition or use the text to make a hardcopy petition.
Level 2
1. Highlight the cultural and religious diversity of the Darfurian people by collaborating with faith-based groups on your campus to host a panel & letter-writing event.
- Hold a write-a-thon: Gather your peers together for food, music and education to write a letter to the US Congress to push for stronger protection measures for Darfurian survivors by taking more serious steps to stop the genocide.
- See PHR's Action Center for the most relevant issue to write letters about. Also see the guide, "Collaborate: Strengthen the Collective Voice".
- Email Danielle for messaging details at dfox [at] phrusa [dot] org.
- Host a Darfur Film Screening & discussion.
- If screening the DVD Judgment on Genocide, see our Judgment on Genocide DVD Guide for support.
- Need incentives to entice your peers to attend? Turn the screening into a lunch-time or breakfast film screening with a post-film roundtable discussion.
Level 3
1. Host a forum or panel to educate your community about the continuation of attacks and current political conditions of Darfur.
- Contact Danielle at dfox [at] phrusa [dot] org for information on finding available speakers to present on Darfur.
- Use the Host A Speaker guide for organizing assistance.
2. Host a Darfur awareness event highlighting Darfurian culture. Your event could be a drumming concert, a dance, a Darfurian food dinner, poetry, or an art exhibit.
- See PHR's guide on planning an event in the PHR Student Chapter Toolbox. Your chapter leader will also have a copy.
- Read the Darfur Culture Guide (pdf) to learn more.
