Protection

Sudanese armed forces and their proxy militia, the Janjaweed, continue to attack unarmed civilians, even in camps for refugees and internally displaced persons (IDP). A robust, well-equipped peacekeeping force with a strong mandate to protect civilians from violent attacks is urgently needed. The UN/African Union force mandated by the UN Security Council should be deployed at once. Concurrently, a political process must begin for a sustainable end to the conflict.
