Students Taking Action on Darfur

Action Options for a Justice & Accountability Focus

Level 1: Advocate for the United States’ help in holding the Sudanese Government accountable

  • Organize a petition drive to collect signatures to push President Bush to cooperate with the International Criminal Court by sharing all relevant materials and intelligence so that it can bring the strongest possible case against the war criminals.
  • For a creative take on petitioning, use a large piece of cloth instead of paper to highlight the Darfurian's practice of burying loved ones by wrapping them up in a single cloth.  Let President Bush know that the massive burials will only stop once the international community holds the Sudanese government accountable.  If interested, contact Danielle at dfox@phrusa.org for further information.
  • See the Sample Justice & Accountability Petition or use the Judgment on Genocide Postcards available in your Darfur Action Kit.

Level 2: Organize a film screening and roundtable discussion

  • Show the poignant Judgment on Genocide DVD that came in your chapter's Darfur Action Kit.  (Didn't receive one?  Email Danielle at dfox@phrusa.org.)
  • See our Judgment on Genocide DVD Guide for support and have the Sample Petition or postcards available for participants to take action.
  • Need incentives to entice your peers to attend?  Turn the screening into a lunch-time or breakfast film screening with a post-film roundtable discussion.

Level 3: Educate your campus about the role of compensation in justice for Darfurians

  • Host a forum or panel on the role of compensation and reparation on your campus, underscoring the importance of rehabilitation and compensation in promoting a healthy future for Darfur's survivor.
  • Contact Danielle (dfox@phrusa.org) for a list of available speakers to speak on Darfur and the role of rehabilitation and compensation in conflict.
  • Look out for PHR's upcoming position paper on reparation to educate yourselves and use the Host A Speaker guide for assistance.
