At PHR we are firmly committed to respecting the privacy of our members and users of our web site. This Privacy Statement describes what information we collect on the web and how it is used. Your submission of data to the PHR site indicates your agreement with the terms of the Privacy Statement.
This website is powered by Convio (“Convio”), a leader in providing web content management tools to non-profit and charitable organizations, allowing organizations to provide a comprehensive suite of services for their members.
Personal information is obtained in a number of ways, including: via your navigation of the PHR site, registration to our online community/member center, online transactions, and your continued involvement with activities conducted via the PHR site, such as action alerts. We pledge to maintain high security standards over your data and always strive to protect it from unsolicited usage and abuse. This Privacy Statement may change at any time; any changes will be posted on this page. Should you have additional questions, comments, or concerns please email us at web@phrusa.org.

When you visit the PHR website, we may ask you for several types of information. Personal information includes your name, e-mail address, home mailing address, phone numbers, age, professional specialty, affiliation, year of graduation (if a student), and financial transactions taken (see e-commerce transactions section below). Anonymous information collected includes your country, OS/browser settings, and language preferences. Depending on your activities while on the site, additional information such as site navigation, subscription preferences, actions taken and personal settings and preferences may also be recorded by PHR/GetActive.
We will only use this information to improve your experience and involvement with PHR. Chief among these goals is to customize the PHR site for you based on the information collected, delivering content that meets your personal preferences and interests. In light of the private nature of this information, we pledge to hold it in strict confidence and not divulge it to third parties except those used by PHR and/or GetActive to provide member services, and we will require them to abide by the standards of this privacy policy. This information will only be used by PHR. We do not sell, rent or share personal information wtih any third party.
The types of information we collect, and why, are summarized below:
Site navigation:
We will collect and store the domain name and host from which you accessed the Internet (e.g., aol.com), the IP address of your computer, your browser software and operating system, the dates and times you accessed the site and the Internet address of any Web site that linked you directly to our site or that you linked to after visiting our site. This information is obtained automatically by our system, and applies to all visitors whether or not they register with PHR. We use this information to measure the number of visitors to sections of our sites, to determine from where our visitors linked and to where our visitors link from the sites. We organize and analyze IP addresses so that we can provide efficient service, enhance security, monitor appropriate usage and produce traffic volume statistics. This type of information may be shared with a marketing consultant to review aggregate data on site traffic. But this data will require the third party consultant to abide by the standards of this privacy policy. Your data will not be available for them to use with other clients at any time.
Use of Cookies and IP addresses:
- Cookies are small pieces of information that are stored by your browser on your computer's hard drive. Most Web browsers automatically accept cookies, but if you prefer, you can edit your browser options to block them in the future. If you do decide to block cookies, though, aspects of this site may not function properly, [such as the shopping cart feature in our webshop]. An example of the types of information stored in a cookie include your browser and operating system, what pages at the PHR site you visited, and your login information.
- IP Address is a unique number that identifies every computer on the Internet. Each time you connect to the Internet your machine is assigned an IP address. An IP address is a number that identifies each sender or receiver of information that is sent across the Internet
- We use your IP address to help diagnose problems with our server and to administer our Web site. Our site uses cookies to keep track of your shopping cart. We also use cookies to maintain user session identity, and to store your Personal Identification and password locally for ease of access.
Site Registration:
To make full use of PHR's web services, you will need to log-in and complete our registration form. This form includes basic demographic data, including your name, email address, home or work address, and subscription preferences (for our various enewsletters), and phone number. We collect and store this information in the GetActive database. Your email address is not shared with other clients of GetActive or other groups.
Once you have registered with us, you will receive a Login Identification that will be used to verify that you have the rights to access content on the site personalized for your preferences. We will also use information provided to us during registration, as well as your activities while visiting the site, to tailor content and services to you individually. Examples of these data include your areas of interest (such as personalized Action Alerts directly to your policymakers, event registration, preferred campaigns, purchases and donations, etc.), technical specifications of your system (OS/Browser versions, e-mail preferences such as HTML vs Plain Text, etc.), and the pages of the PHR site you visit most often. By studying this information, we will be able to update you about upcoming campaigns, events in your community, new products and services that may interest you, and improve your overall experience in the PHR online community.
E-Commerce Transactions:
When purchasing products or services from the site, or when making donations to PHR, personal information about you will be collected to complete the transaction. That may include your name, billing address, phone number, and relevant credit card type and bank account information. GetActive does not store the full credit card number in its database, just the last four digits of the credit card. All such transactions will be scrambled using industry-standard SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) encryption technology (provided by GetActive's online gateway partner Verisign) before being sent over the Internet. Get Active will store credit card numbers in an encrypted form in the GetActive database only as required to fulfill financial transactions as part of the Services provided to PHR and will only display the last four digits of credit card numbers on web pages or confirmation emails. GetActive represents that it complies with payment card industry data security standards.
In addition to collecting this personal information when you perform a transaction on the PHR site, we will also assemble information about the types of products and services that you purchase. This data may be used in PHR-sponsored marketing and updating of the site's services to its members, as well as to notify you of similar upcoming events, products, and services. In addition, aggregate data surrounding the number and types of commercial transactions on the site may be used for maintenance and reporting purposes, but will never include personal data relating to a particular transaction.
Demography & Action:
One of PHR's goals is to raise awareness of human rights abuses and encourage action to make change. To this end, PHR, through its online Action Center, will need your home address (including zip code and county) to identify your representatives in Congress and provide you with their contact information. Additionally, we may also use your names and affiliations for any petitions or letter signings that you opt-in to. Your consent will be sought in any case where we use your name or affiliations.
Conference Registration:
When signing up for a PHR-sponsored conference, you will be asked to provide both personal and conference-specific information, including workshop preferences, meal preferences, medical specialty, school/group affiliation(s) and graduation year. This information will be used to tailor elements of the conference for your benefit, as well as to provide us with demographic information about the attendees and the conference such as popular workshops and the breadth of participants. This information may also be used to update you about upcoming events that may be of interest.
Student Chapters and External Organizations:
PHR seeks to encourage like-minded students to take action and promote PHR and its causes on their campuses. To facilitate these campaigns, PHR will store information about upcoming events sponsored by PHR-sanctioned student groups on its Events calendars. In addition, PHR will provide links to sites maintained by these student groups. Though PHR encourages these organizations, it does not authorize any statements made by these student groups on their sites, irrespective of their relation to PHR or its subsidiaries.
