Somali Appeals Court’s Decision Does Little to Reassure Victims of Sexual Violence
A Somali appeals court’s decision this week to overturn the conviction of a woman who claimed she was gang-raped by security forces is a welcome development, PHR said today. A regional court last month had sentenced the woman to a year in prison, contending that she had fabricated the rape charge and damaged state security.
Extend Violence Against Women Act Protections Worldwide, Urges PHR

PHR today called on the president of Somalia to reverse the convictions of two people: a 27-year-old mother of five who alleges that she was gang-raped by soldiers, and a journalist who has reported on sexual violence in camps for internally displaced Somalis.
State of the Union Address Neglected Human Rights
PHR today expressed disappointment that President Obama failed to mention a specific human rights agenda in Tuesday’s State of the Union address. PHR had previously called on the president to seize the opportunity to lay out in detail his strategy to combat torture and mass atrocities around the world.
