As the revolutions collectively known as “the Arab Spring” have rocked the Middle East and North Africa, medical professionals have often been caught in the crossfire. PHR's Richard Sollom joins WHYY NPR in Philadelphia to discuss doctors under siege in the Arab world, and the pursuit of “medical neutrality” on Capitol Hill and in the United Nations.

Doctors in Bahrain merit more than platitudes
Much has happened in the small island of Bahrain since it was engulfed in the Arab Spring in February 2011. Unlike other conflicts in other Arab states, the Bahrain protest did not demand the downfall of the ruling regime but sought the establishment of a democratic constitutional monarchy and recognition of human rights.

Bahraini forces attack peaceful protesters
Bahraini regime forces have once again attacked peaceful protesters following the release of a report which accuses Manama of rights abuses. On Sunday, the forces fired live bullets and tear gas at civilians in the town of A'ali, just outside the capital city of Manama. The attack took place during a funeral ceremony for a protester killed by security forces.

Bahrain report confirms human rights abuses
The head of a special commission in Bahrain has said authorities used torture and excessive force against detainees arrested in a crackdown earlier this year. The comments by Mahmoud Cherif Bassiouni were the first details from a highly anticipated report released on Wednesday on the measures used against mainly Shia Muslim-led demonstrators seeking greater rights from Bahrain's Al Khalifa monarchy.
