Deliberate attacks on hospitals and health care professionals in Syria persist despite three United Nations resolutions aimed at protecting civilians and new hopes of relief following recent international pledges of aid to Syrians in need, according to an online map of attacks on health PHR updated today.
The philanthropist and financier George Soros and Dr. Denis Mukwege, a champion in the fight against rape as a weapon of war, will be honored by PHR for their contributions to the global struggle for human rights. The awards will be presented at a gala dinner in New York City on April 28, 2015.
PHR is alarmed by new reports of suspected chemical barrel bomb attacks in Syria, pointing to the fifth attack in 10 days, and calls on the United Nations Security Council to implement its own resolutions to stop indiscriminate attacks.
PHR today welcomed a recommendation by the Pentagon’s independent health advisors that medical personnel be excused from duties that violate professional ethics.
