HERAF Newsletter, April 2008: Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights in Humanitarian Crisis

The post-election violence witnessed in Kenya brought with it unprecedented suffering, destruction, injuries, and deaths. There were estimated 1,000 deaths while an estimated 300,000 people were displaced from their homes. Some escaped with injuries of various forms and extents. The conflict attracted the attention of many local, national ,and international organizations that responded with food, clothing, shelter, and other humanitarian assistance, while others offered emergency medical care. However, reproductive health remains a "missing link" in most humanitarian efforts.

The reproductive health care needs of internally displaced persons cover a wide range of issues, and the most vulnerable members of the community include children, adolescents, and women.
