About the Campaign

PHR's Key Accomplishments in the Campaign to Ban Landmines

For nearly twenty years, PHR has been a leader in the Campaign to Ban Landmines.

1991
PHR researched and exposed the overwhelming public health threat of landmines in Cambodia by publishing "Landmines: The Coward's War" together with Human Rights Watch. The two groups issue the first call for an international comprehensive ban on the weapon.

1992
The International Campaign to Ban Landmines was founded by a small group of organizations, including Physicians for Human Rights.

1993
PHR Published Landmines: A Deadly Legacy as a joint production with the Human Rights Watch Arms Project.

Mid – 1990s
Physicians for Human Rights was one of the founding organizations of the US Campaign to Ban Landmines.

2000 - 2005
PHR served as the coordinating organization of the USCBL. Largely through PHR's leadership, the USCBL accomplished many small victories in keeping the landmines issue alive in the first five years of the century.  Some of these include:

January 2000 -- Organized Iowans to Ban Landmines event in Des Moines to raise the landmines issue and the treaty among the candidates running for president.

March 2000 -- Published "Measuring Landmine Incidents & Injuries and the Capacity to Provide Care: A Guide to Assist Governments and Non-governmental Organizations in Collecting Data about Landmine Victims, Hospitals and Orthopedic Centers."

March 2001 -- Organized "Ban Landmines Week" together with the International Campaign to Ban Landmines.  The event included a conference with hundreds of activists from around the world; meetings with the offices of more than 300 Members of Congress regarding an anti-landmine bill that had just been introduced; a giant shoe pile of 6,000 shoes and press conference at the Capitol; a 700 person gala with Her Majesty Queen Noor of Jordan, Senator Patrick Leahy, and many other dignitaries; a hockey-on-prosthetics game among amputees; and more.
