The juvenile justice system was originally created to provide guidance and rehabilitation for wayward youth, but recent punitive laws and prison-like institutions that mimic the adult criminal system often violate children's rights to health and appropriate care. PHR's Health and Justice for Youth Campaign mobilizes health professionals to advocate for youth in the justice system.

Mobilizing Health Professionals Against the Juvenile Death Penalty

Following the Supreme Court ruling, PHR Executive Director Leonard Rubenstein said: "We are thrilled about the decision. It provides a legal grounding for what scientists have shown—that kids are different from adults."






Victory in Connecticut

Thank you to everyone who participated in PHR's action calling on Connecticut to raise the age of juvenile court jurisdiction from 16 to 18. On June 29, 2007, Connecticut Governor M. Jodi Rell signed into law a budget bill that includes a provision and funding to raise this age.
