Where AIDS Was Discovered: A view of Kalitizo Hospital in the Rakai district of southern Uganda, where the world's first HIV/AIDS case was described. Approximately 300 AIDS patients are being treated with anti-retroviral therapy at Kalitizo, a public hospital, but the facility is lacking in staff, equipment, medicine and supplies. In the Rakai district, 11,000 people are in need of anti-retroviral drugs. Although the HIV infection rate in Rakai has declined since the 1990's, at 12 percent it is still above the national average (6 percent).
