Support the Work of PHR

Planned Giving

Planned giving is a set of philanthropic tools that can advance your own financial objectives while supporting the critical work of PHR. We invite you to learn more about PHR's planned giving options. Please contact the Development Office.

Monthly Giving

PHR's new monthly giving program is an affordable and convenient way to help promote human rights. Pre-authorized gifts provide PHR with a consistent source of support, which allows us to respond quickly to human rights crises as they arise. Your monthly or quarterly donation helps PHR protect human rights all year long.

To join PHR's monthly giving program, please specify a monthly or quarterly amount on our online form, and PHR will automatically deduct the contribution from your credit or debit card. You will receive a monthly acknowledgement via email for your records. Of course, you can cancel at any time simply by notifying us by phone, mail or email.

Gifts of Stock

Please consider making a gift of shares of stock to PHR. Under current tax laws, this is an appealing gift option for many PHR supporters. For more information or to make a gift of stock, please contact the Development Office.

Corporate Matching Programs

Many companies offer matching gift programs through which they match the charitable contribution made by their employees. Corporate matching gifts can double or sometimes triple your contribution to PHR.

Please check with your company's Human Resources department to determine if your company offers charitable gift matching. If your employer offers this benefit, your Human Resources department will be able to provide you with a matching gift form. Complete this form and mail it along with your donation to:

Physicians for Human Rights
Development Office
2 Arrow Street, Suite 301
Cambridge, MA 02138

We will verify receipt of your gift and return the form to your company, which will then issue a matching gift contribution to PHR.

PHR is registered as a tax-exempt public charity by the Internal Revenue Service under Section 501(c)(3). PHR's tax identification number is 22-2488437.

To request a copy of PHR's 501(c)(3) certificate of tax exemption, please contact the Development Office .

IRA Charitable Rollover Gifts

The Pension Protection Act of 2006 has been extended. It allows eligible individuals (70.5 years old or older) to make charitable gifts to PHR without negative income tax consequences by using funds that they have accumulated in their Individual Retirement Accounts without negative income tax consequences.

The new tax-free IRA rollover option may be especially attractive to:

  • Donors who do not itemize their deductions
  • Donors who are required to take minimum withdrawals from their IRAs but do not need the income currently.
  • Donors whose income level causes the phase-out of their exemptions.
  • Donors already giving at their 50 percent deduction limit.
  • Donors for whom additional income will cause more of their Social Security income to be taxed.

There are a number of specific rules and points to consider with this new law:

  • You must be 70.5 years of age or older at the time of the gift.
  • Your IRA rollover gift must be made to a qualified charity.
  • The transfer must go directly from your IRA to a qualified charity. and cannot fund life income arrangements such as gift annuities or trusts.
  • Your IRA rollover gifts cannot exceed $100,000 per tax year.
  • The amount rolled over from your IRA will be excluded from your gross income.
  • Your IRA rollover will count toward your minimum distribution requirement.
  • There is no federal income tax deduction for the IRA rollover gift.
  • The IRA rollover provision is effective only through December 31, 2009.

To support PHR's mission by making a gift from your IRA with an IRA Charitable Rollover Gift, please call your IRA plan administrator to arrange for a direct transfer to PHR and notify our Development Office of your plans.

You should always consult your own financial and legal advisers before making a charitable gift.
