Helen Potts, PhD
Helen Potts is PHR’s Chief Program Officer of Health Programs. She had previously been a Senior Research Officer to Paul Hunt, UN Special Rapporteur on the right to the highest attainable standard of health (2002-2008). In that capacity, she authored two landmark studies: Accountability and the right to the highest attainable standard of health (pdf); and Participation and the right to the highest attainable standard of health (pdf).
Helen has also researched, developed and lectured in several courses related to health and human rights for the University of Essex, Monash University and Deakin University. Previously, she held roles with the Red Cross in Australia and with the International Federation of the Red Cross in Cambodia, North Korea and elsewhere.
Helen is trained as, and has practiced as, a nurse and midwife and holds Master of Tropical Health and Bachelor of Law degrees as well a PhD for which she wrote a doctoral thesis entitled Human Rights and Public Health: Rhetoric, Reality and Reconciliation, examining the right of participation by individuals and groups in public health strategy development.
