Rachel Muthoga, LLM, LLB

Position: Kenya Coordinator, Program on Sexual Violence in Conflict Zones
Rachel Muthoga

Rachel is interested in the study of gender-based violence in situations of conflict and the role of law in its resolution. She has wide experience speaking at various fora, including a US Congressional briefing and at the US Institute for Peace. She currently is a member of the Independent Medico-Legal Unit Justice Network, a group of human rights defenders, and sits on the Leadership Team of the Kenya Chapter of Prison Fellowship International, dealing with restorative justice and prison reform. She has been an active civic educator and trainer on women’s rights.

Rachel's experience is in the field of law reform and women’s rights. She interned at the headquarters of Human Rights Watch in New York in their International Justice Program working on matters related to international criminal justice and the International Criminal Court. Rachel then returned to Kenya to work as the Kenya Coordinator of PHR’s Program on Sexual Violence in Conflict Zones.

She graduated with distinction from Georgetown University with a Masters in International Legal Studies and a Human Rights Certificate. Rachel earned her LLB degree at the University of Nairobi. After graduation she worked in a private law firm before joining the Law Society of Kenya as a program officer, implementing the umbrella bar association's continuing legal education and advocacy work of the society including legal aid and civic education.

Rachel has worked for the US Embassy in Nairobi as the Legal Assistant to the Resident Legal Advisor in the Department of Justice, working on the implementation of the Women’s Justice and Empowerment Initiative and providing development support to the criminal justice system in Kenya. She joined PHR in 2011.
