Human Resources Manager

We seek a human resources manager to join our team of dedicated and dynamic professionals. This position will be located in our NYC office, and will report to the chief operating officer at Physicians for Human Rights (PHR).

The human resources manager is accountable for all facets of HR including employee relations, staffing, compensation, benefits, training & development, talent management, HRIS, and compliance reporting. The HR manager is a strategic and tactical partner with PHR management in nurturing and reinforcing a great working environment with a culture of empowerment, high performance, excellent quality of service, continuous development and improvement, and goal attainment.

Reports to: Chief Operating Officer

Location: New York, NY

Responsibilities Include:

  • Drive recruiting processes and efforts, to hire talented people who will embody PHR’s vision and culture, further enabling PHR to fulfill our critical mission; this includes job description creation, sourcing methods, candidate screening, interviewing and culture-fit assessment, selection, and on-boarding
  • Continually express, model, and reinforce PHR’s culture and values with employees and in every aspect of HR duties and lifecycle
  • Design and update a new hire process with inclusion/collaboration with PHR staff
  • Develop and lead a best-in-class intern program – cultivating deep relationships with academic institutions, attracting and selecting talent from across the country, providing impactful opportunities (projects, networking, fieldtrips, etc.) for current interns, and maintaining meaningful connections and relationships with intern alumni
  • Evaluate employee issues as they arise and give advice and counsel based upon common HR practices
  • Manage all employee benefit programs including health, dental, life, disability insurance, 403(b) Plan, and Section 125 Plan; initiate Benefit Open Enrollments and monitor expenses related to premium pay-outs
  • Design, update, and employ HR best practices in all HR policy/procedures which include security and emergency procedures
  • Partner with the COO and PHR’s senior management in all organization design/development issues for consistency in structure and implementation
  • Manage consultant and volunteer agreements with consistency and legal compliance
  • Review and recommend staff professional development opportunities, and in partnership with senior management ensure that staff and organization is prepared and positioned for future growth
  • Manage timesheet review, approval, and tracking processes
  • Process payroll via the Paychex system
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in human resources, business administration, or related concentration; PHR or SPHR preferred
  • 5-7 years combined HR generalist and HR management experience
  • Experience in leading and/or reinforcing an organization’s culture and values, in the day to day work with employees
  • Mature, adaptable, resourceful, and detailed oriented, with the ability to work both independently and as a member of a team; a good sense of humor is a plus
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Solid strategic thinking, organizational, and planning skills
  • MS Office required; experience with Paychex HRIS preferred
  • Ability to multi-task and flexibility to re-align/prioritize a must
  • Solid negotiation and creative problem solving skills required
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and confidentiality required
  • Demonstrated project management experience including the ability to plan efficiently, organize, and manage complex multiple projects simultaneously with limited supervision or direction, while meeting deadlines
  • A commitment to human rights is essential
