Wangu Kanja is the founder and executive director of the Wangu Kanja Foundation, a nonprofit organization that provides survivors of sexual violence with access to medical, psychological, and legal redress.
Ms. Kanja survived rape and a carjacking in 2002 and has since dedicated her life to promoting awareness and encouraging empowerment and healing for survivors of sexual violence. She now speaks about her experience openly and teaches others how to avoid risk situations. Ms. Kanja has participated in preparation activities for the launch of the International Campaign to Stop Rape and Gender Violence in Conflict. Before founding the Wangu Kanja Foundation, she worked as a marketing consultant for a taxi firm in Nairobi.
